Video: The knights templar in Paris

We are following Romain through the Knights Templar in Paris.

The Knights Templar emerged during the early 12th century as a monastic order dedicated to protecting Christian pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. Founded in 1119, the Order swiftly gained prominence and amassed considerable wealth and influence across Europe.

A significant commandery of the Knights Templar was established in Coulommiers, France, serving as a strategic stronghold and administrative center. Here, the Templars managed vast estates, conducted financial transactions, and trained recruits in the art of warfare.

Their influence extended to Paris, which is Romain’s next stop. The Marais district bears subtle traces of their legacy. Although no grand fortress remains, subtle architectural details and street names hint at their former presence. The Templars’ influence in Paris was not limited to physical structures; they played a significant role in shaping the city’s economic and social landscape.

However, the Order’s prosperity sparked jealousy and suspicion, leading to its downfall. In 1307, King Philip IV of France, in collusion with Pope Clement V, orchestrated a devastating purge, arresting and torturing Templar members on charges of heresy and other crimes. The once-mighty Order faced relentless persecution, culminating in the suppression of the Templars by 1312, when Pope Clement officially disbanded the Order, and its assets were confiscated.

Despite their abrupt end, the Knights Templar endure as legendary figures, shrouded in myth and mystery. Their tales of valor and intrigue continue to captivate the imagination, leaving an enduring legacy that transcends the passage of time.
