Paris Mourns the Loss of the Marché des Enfants Rouges

Inside the historic Marché des Enfants Rouges, a Parisian culinary favourite.

Paris woke up this morning to devastating news. A fire had ravaged the Marché des Enfants Rouges, one of the city’s most treasured historic markets. Paris is no stranger to fires that threaten its heritage. In 2019, a blaze devastated Notre-Dame Cathedral. Today, another historic landmark has suffered extensive damage.

Located in the heart of the Marais, the Marché des Enfants Rouges was more than a food market. It was a meeting place for locals, traders and visitors. It was also a favourite destination for food lovers exploring Paris.

The History of the Marché des Enfants Rouges

Established in 1615 under the reign of Louis XIII, the Marché des Enfants Rouges holds the distinction of being the oldest covered food market in Paris. Its unusual name, meaning “Market of the Red Children”, can be traced back to a nearby orphanage founded in 1536, where children wore distinctive red uniforms. Although the institution closed in the 18th century, its legacy lives on in the market’s name.

For centuries, the market has been an integral part of life in the Marais, adapting to the changing needs and tastes of its neighbourhood. However, its survival was far from guaranteed. In the 1990s, proposals to demolish the site and replace it with a car park sparked strong opposition from local residents, whose campaign helped protect this important piece of Parisian heritage.

Following an extensive restoration, the market reopened in 2000, welcoming a new generation of visitors. Its blend of traditional food merchants, independent vendors and international cuisine soon reaffirmed its status as one of the Marais’s most distinctive culinary destinations.

The Fire of 12 October 2026

A major fire broke out at the Marché des Enfants Rouges overnight on 12 October 2026. Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings. The historic market suffered extensive damage, leaving local traders and residents facing the loss of a place deeply woven into the life of the Marais. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of historic landmarks and the importance of preserving the places that give Paris its unique character. For generations, the market has been a gathering place for locals and visitors alike, making its loss all the more poignant.

A Favourite Destination for Food Lovers

The Marché des Enfants Rouges was known for its lively atmosphere and diverse food stalls. Visitors could discover French cheeses, fresh produce and international specialities. Moroccan, Japanese and other cuisines made the market a popular lunch destination.

It was also a favourite stop for visitors exploring the Marais on food tours. The market offered a chance to experience local life through food.

At My Private Paris, we believe food is one of the best ways to discover a city. Paris still offers many wonderful culinary destinations. Rue Montorgueil is known for its traditional food shops. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is home to historic bakeries and gourmet boutiques.
